"The High Elves strive for beauty and perfection in all things, even combat. We see swordsmanship as another art form to be practiced and refined alongside poetry and painting. The skill of the Swordmasters of Hoeth is the epitome of the High Elf swordsman. Their blades dance with the grace of a butterfly as it alights on a leaf, yet these butterflies leave naught but ruin their wake as they flit away."
- Lithanti, Swordmaster of Ellyrion

Overview

It was under the Scholar-King Bel-Korhadris that the White Tower of Hoeth was first designed and constructed. Gathering the foremost architects, artisans, and magicians of his age, Bel-Korhadris dedicated vast resources into building what he envisioned as a massive repository of elven knowledge. His endeavor would take near a millennia to complete, but when finished it would stand as a gathering place for the greatest minds to share the most esoteric histories and lore. The completion of the White Tower ushered in what would later be known as the Second Golden Age. It is from this glorious era that the Swordmasters can trace their origins.

Aside from vast mystical defenses offered by the monolithic White Tower of Saphery, the continued safety of the Loremasters that reside within it is the responsibility of the dreaded Swordmasters. These warrior-adepts serve the Loremasters when information gathering or escort is required. In times of war, the Swordmasters are expected to be prepared to answer the call of the Phoenix King should he have need of their deadly skills. Each Swordmaster has dedicated his mind and body to the pursuit of knowledge as it pertains to the martial arts, and some amongst their number have practiced the various techniques of physical combat for centuries.

How To Play

A powerful tank class, the Swordmaster can soak up damage as well as anyone in the world. Utilizing the Balance system, the Swordmaster has three basic levels of Balance. Depending on what state of Balance he is in, certain abilities are unlocked. Each ability increases the level of Balance to the next one in the ladder until the 3rd (or Perfect) level is reached, at which point the most powerful abilities can be used and the entire process starts over.

Before a fight starts, the Swordmaster should activate Heaven's Blade to enhance his blade with magical power. Starting a fight, most of the abilities for the Swordmaster are unusable due to a lack of Balance. Using Graceful Strike or Gryphon's Lash will put the Swordmaster into the 2nd Stage of Balance (Improved). He can then use Quick Incision, a DOT and snare attack or Eagle's Flight, an attack that will greatly increase his chance to parry for a short time. These attacks will also move the Swordmaster into the 3rd stage of Balance (Perfect). Once here, he can utilize the powerful Dragon's Talon, which resets the Balance level and starts the process over again. If the Swordmaster is fighting an enemy caster, substituting Whispering Wind for Dragon's Talon will silence the enemy for a short period of time. In a group, the Swordmaster should sprinkle Taunt whenever he needs to control the aggression of the enemy. If a healer or mage is taking frequent damage, Guard can help spread out the damage he is taking to the Swordmaster.

How To Defeat

At first glance a Swordmaster is a daunting opponent, and many foes quickly fall to their shining blade if they do not approach the fight with caution. The key to defeating these master swordsmen is to interrupt their dance. A Swordmaster relies on footwork and balance to launch his attacks, and while the reach of his Greatsword is long it cannot reach a well hidden marksman. As with all melee opponents, the best approach is to keep a Swordmaster at range, blasting through his powerful defenses with well timed missile and magic attacks. If you find yourself in close combat with these masters of the blade, interrupt their graceful dance with a powerful blow that will take them off their feet.
